Huge arena and a great guide

The arena is huge. I was surprised it held 20,000 people! Our guide told us about how they built it, and it was so fascinating to hear. I also liked hearing about medieval tournaments that happened there. Hearing that it’s used today for concerts and film festivals was interesting to hear. I can only imagine how exciting it must be to go to a concert inside the arena. This tour is definitely worth the money. If you’re in Pula, go for it!

Best tour in Pula

My wife and I went with our two sons, and we had a wonderful time! Our guide explained the design of the arena in simple terms, which helped us understand how it worked. We saw the arches, tunnels, and stone walls where the gladiators prepared. The stories about its history were interesting. Our boys especially liked hearing about the gladiator battles and exploring the underground. Great for families!

DESCRIPTION

Arena Pula Guided Tour

ENTER THE ANCIENT PULA ARENA

Your Pula Arena Tours begin at one of the world’s best-preserved Roman amphitheaters. Its construction began under Emperor Augustus in the 1st century BCE and continued during Emperor Vespasian’s reign in the 1st century CE. This massive structure is 433 feet (132 meters) long and 344 feet (105 meters) wide. This makes it the sixth-largest Roman amphitheater still standing today. At its peak, it held up to 20,000 spectators. When you enter, picture the crowd cheering for gladiators. You can also imagine wild animals roaming in the arena. The stones and arches around you have seen almost two thousand years of history.

SEE THE TOWERS AND UNDERGROUND PASSAGES

During your tour, you will explore the arena’s four original towers, each standing 105 feet (32 meters) high. The Pula Arena stands out as the only Roman amphitheater in the world with all four towers fully intact. These towers supported the structure and housed staircases and mechanisms for the velarium, while also serving as elevated vantage points. They protected the arena and the city. Next, you will descend into the underground tunnels below the arena floor. These tunnels were used to hold gladiators and animals before events. Walking through these passageways, you feel the tension and excitement before the games. The tunnels also host exhibitions of Roman artifacts. This will give you a look into life during the Roman Empire and the role the arena played in the city’s social life.

EXPERIENCE ARENA’S NEW ROLE

As the Roman Empire declined, the arena’s purpose changed. Gladiatorial games were officially banned in 404 AD. Later, the arena hosted knight tournaments, various gatherings, and local fairs in the Middle Ages. The arena had strong walls and a great spot by the Adriatic Sea. In later centuries, parts of the arena were adapted for defensive purposes. Today, Pula Arena Tours reveal how this historic site has become a lively cultural venue. Since 1954, it has held the famous Pula Film Festival. It also hosts concerts, operas, and theater shows. Your guide will also explain how the arena blends history with modern entertainment. This offers a unique experience that connects the past and present.

Arena Pula Guided Tour

The legend behind the Pula Arena

In the Middle Ages, locals believed the Pula Arena was not built by humans but by demons. Its huge size and well-shaped stones looked impossible to make with the tools back then. Legend says demons built the arena in one night, carrying massive stones from a distant stone pit. They were said to have stopped working at dawn, leaving the arena unfinished. People feared the place and avoided going there after dark. They thought that spirits still roamed the tunnels below. The myth grew stronger as parts of the arena were taken apart to use for building houses. Locals believed this angered the demons. Of course, this legend is not taken literally today, but it remains a fun part of local storytelling.
